How scoring works

Each forecast is checked on its resolution date against the wording quoted in its row, and its outcome is added to the row. It is then scored with the Brier score: the square of the gap between our estimate and the outcome, counting the outcome as 1 if the event happened and 0 if it did not. A score of 0 is perfect and lower is better; until a forecast resolves, its score shows as a dash. Where the registered wording allows a partial outcome, the row states how it was counted. A registered forecast is never edited: a revision is registered as a new forecast, and the one it replaces stays listed and is scored too. Every forecast in a published brief stays listed here, whether it scores well or badly. We make no claim about our overall forecasting skill until enough forecasts have resolved to support one.

The register covers published Strature Briefs only. Forecasts made in work that is not published are not listed here. Forecasts are general research on public events and policy; they are not investment, legal or tax advice.
