Impact is the average of the four parts, rounded, plus one point when Canada is directly hit on two or more channels, up to 10.

Two separate scales from 1 to 10. Strature never multiplies or merges them.

What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. Chip exports US$113.89bn in Q2 2026 (+181.6%) and US$148.02bn in Q3 (+218.7%); Q2 current-account surplus US$116.6bn against US$28.4bn a year earlier; IMF about US$422bn for 2026, US$177.5bn by 2031 [1]
  2. Oct 1-20 chip exports US$27.5bn (+222.5%), 44.7% of exports; total US$61.6bn [2]
  3. 13 working days, 2.5 more than a year earlier (Chuseok); per working day +65.9%; DDR5 16Gb US$48 in Sep from US$46.50 in Aug [3]

Why it matters

South Korea's chip exports reached US$148.02bn in the third quarter of 2026, up 218.7% on a year, and its second-quarter current-account surplus of US$116.6bn was larger than Germany's and Japan's together. In the first 20 days of October chips were 44.7% of all exports. TrendForce expects DRAM supply to stay tight in 2027. The risk is that the cycle turns and chip exports fall below the year before for three months in a row.

Why Likelihood 3 Pushes: NAND loosening in 2H27, warnings on AI investment and the US midterms, the 15-month 2022-23 run. Brakes: TrendForce expects DRAM tighter in 2027 with prices rising.

Why Impact 5 Threshold case three months of small year-on-year falls. Key price DRAM contract prices.

The other facts on file (5)
  • 2025 chip exports US$173.4bn (+22.2%); total exports US$709.7bn [4] (2 Jan 2026)
  • October 2023 chip exports US$8.9bn, -3.1%, smallest drop since August 2022 [5] (1 Nov 2023)
  • November 2023 chip exports +12.9%, ending 15 months of declines [6] (30 Nov 2023)
  • TrendForce: DRAM supply tight in 2027, prices rising; NAND looser and prices pressured in 2H27 [7] (30 Jul 2026)
  • Taiwan imported US$63.7bn from South Korea in 2025 (+45.7%) [8] (23 Feb 2026)

How it spreads

If

Channels 4 on the card

  1. CanadaSouth Korea took 46 of 122 Kitimat LNG cargo records (Strature calculation) [10] and was projected to import 16 million barrels of Canadian crude in 2026 [9]; no loss from a chip turn sourced.
  2. Growth and the wonChips were 44.7% of exports in 1-20 October [2] and 24.4% in 2025 (Strature calculation) [4], so a turn would cut the surplus the IMF expects to peak in 2026 [1].
  3. TaiwanTaiwan imported US$63.7bn from South Korea in 2025 [8]; a memory turn hits both economies at once.
  4. US trade pressureA falling surplus with the US would ease trade pressure.

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Tight to the end

DRAM stays short through 2027 and exports keep rising year on year.

  2. S2

    A NAND-led slowdown

NAND prices fall in 2H27 and growth slows sharply but stays above zero.

  3. S3

    The cycle turns

Cloud spending is cut and DRAM prices fall; chip exports drop below 2026 levels.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1Monthly chip export growth stays positive
S2Monthly chip export growth below 10%
S3A quarter-on-quarter fall in DRAM contract prices reported by TrendForce

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

A turn would also ease the record surplus with the US that could renew trade pressure, and would free memory supply for buyers who face higher prices; TrendForce expects smartphone and notebook demand to fall in 2027 because of component costs [7].
