A Houthi attack hits Egypt or Egyptian forces

The test Between 28 Oct 2026 and 31 Oct 2027, a missile, drone or boat attack attributed to the Houthis (by the Egyptian or Saudi government or Yemen's internationally recognised government, or claimed by the Houthis) hits Egyptian territory, a ship under Egypt's flag or owned by the Suez Canal Authority, or Egyptian military forces or equipment anywhere, as stated by an Egyptian authority or reported by two independent news agencies; an interception with no hit does not count.

What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. Coalition destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Taif; Houthis claimed a drone strike on Abha airport (not confirmed by Saudi Arabia); WSJ: US told Gulf states to prepare for a renewed Iran campaign after 3 Nov [5]
  2. Mohammed Ali al-Houthi called the vote a declaration of war; 97 fighters killed (at least 63 Houthi, 34 pro-government), mostly near Bab el-Mandeb, from late 26 Oct (AFP military sources, reported 27 Oct) [4]
  3. Parliament authorised the President, by two-thirds, to take the necessary measures to support Saudi Arabia; a regional official said air defences and aircraft would deploy [1]
  4. Tally not published; no formal Saudi request announced [2]
  5. Three closed meetings and two postponements; Social Democratic Party (11 seats) abstained; Sisi: support defends Saudi territory and does not include an attack on Yemen; Abdelatty talks daily with Iran; unidentified drone struck Damietta port in July 2026; Saudi-based Egyptians remitted about US$12bn last fiscal year [3]
  6. UN envoy: the government reported retaking areas around the strait [11]
Show 3 earlier changes
  1. The government said on 5 Oct 2026 it had retaken the Bab el-Mandeb area (commentary, low confidence) [10]
  2. Houthis took Mocha, Mayyun and the Zuqar-Hanish islands (about 160 km north of Bab el-Mandeb) in September 2026 [8]
  3. Suez revenue US$505m in July 2026, highest since Dec 2023, partly on Saudi crude rerouted via the Red Sea (Bloomberg) [7]

Why it matters

On 26 Oct 2026 Egypt's House of Representatives authorised President el-Sisi to give military support to defend Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks. The next morning a Houthi political bureau member wrote that Egypt 'declares war against the Republic of Yemen' (low-confidence relay). Sisi says the role is defensive and excludes any attack on Yemen; no formal Saudi request has been announced. No Houthi hit on Egypt in the 36 months before the window was found; drones fell on Taba and Nuweiba in October 2023 (not confirmed in this pass).

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: Egypt's 26 Oct authorisation to support Saudi Arabia; a Houthi official's statement that the vote is a declaration of war (low-confidence relay); Houthi missiles and drones at Saudi cities where Egyptian air defences would sit; heavy fighting near Bab el-Mandeb; a reported US plan to renew its Iran campaign.

Why Impact 3 Threshold case: one hit, no deaths needed; accident-type security event, only cited channels. Worse case (Egypt joins strikes in Yemen, canal threatened) not scored.

  2. Egypt's postureA hit would test the defend-not-attack line; pressure to strike back would rise (Strature's view).
  3. The canalA strike near the canal could deter tankers now using Suez (Strature's view; not sourced).
  4. Gulf moneyAbout US$12bn of remittances from Saudi Arabia tie Egypt to Saudi security [3].

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Defence only

Egypt sends air defences, stays out of Yemen, and no strike reaches it.

  2. S2

    First hit

A Houthi drone or missile hits Egyptian forces in Saudi Arabia or a site in Egypt.

  3. S3

    Egypt at war

After a hit, Egypt joins coalition strikes in Yemen.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1An Egyptian statement naming the units and their base
S2A Houthi claim naming an Egyptian target
S3A second parliamentary vote, or a statement that drops 'no attack on Yemen'

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

A defensive role deepens Egypt's ties with Riyadh, which holds deposits at Egypt's central bank and is home to workers who send about US$12bn a year [3]. Egypt's daily contact with Tehran gives it a mediating role that others lack.
