A container ship sinks in the Strait of Hormuz as attacks rise

What happened

The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride was hit on 13 Oct 2026 and sank on 14 Oct while under tow; all 21 crew were taken off1. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the ship struck a mine1. The US Central Command said an IRGC projectile hit it1. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) found no evidence for a mine, but still warns of mines and debris near the wreck1. The JMIC counted 121 US-facilitated transits from 11 to 14 Oct, about 30 a day, against a pre-war average of about 1381. The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre logged 15 other attacks from 6 to 14 Oct2.

Why it matters

Fewer ships carry less oil and gas out of the Gulf. Oil passing the strait fell from about 20.8 million barrels on 8 Oct to 2.9 million on 11 Oct, Kpler data show2. The pre-war average was 17.1 million a day2. Brent crude traded at US$106.58 early on 14 Oct2. Shippers, insurers, and importers of Gulf crude and liquefied gas in Asia and Europe carry the cost.

Background

The war began on 28 Feb 20262. US strikes on Iran were reported on 30 Aug and 1 Sep 2026 (brief S-001, since publication). The International Maritime Organization lists 113 confirmed incidents and 24 seafarers killed as of 14 Oct1. The JMIC rates the threat "severe"1.

What it means for our forecasts

Brief C-002 sets out six paths for Iran and the strait to 18 Jul 2028. Attacks that rise and fall without a settlement fit Guard-Managed Attrition, the path the brief rates most likely, at 13.74% (F-0020). They also bear on Frozen Siege, 9.2% (F-0010), and Contested Drift, 11.7% (F-0008). Each is our estimate, scored when it resolves. Brief S-001's 61% for a renewed US or Israeli strike between 22 Aug and 20 Nov 2026 (F-0074) is scored as registered on 4 Dec.

No estimate changes with this note. Estimates are our own, sealed when issued, and scored when they resolve.
