  2. 28 Oct 2026: FOMC kept its range at 3.75-4%, 10-2; no purchases against disorderly markets announced [17]
  3. UK Budget 2026 and the OBR forecast published on 28 Oct 2026 [16]

  5. Canada 10-year 3.90% on 21 Oct and 3.78% on 22 Oct 2026; long bond 4.10% on 22 Oct [9]
  6. UK 10-year nominal par yield 4.74% on 1 Jul, 5.43% on 8 Oct, 5.33% on 21 Oct; 20-year 5.27%, 5.79%, 5.64% [2]
Show 2 earlier changes
  1. 30-year JGB auction of 8 Oct 2026: yield at the lowest accepted price 4.121%, average 4.109% [5]
  2. France 10-year 4.48% and Germany 3.47% in September 2026; 3.89% and 3.07% in July, about 81 bp (OECD monthly) [3]

Why it matters

Long-term government bond yields across the G7 rose sharply from July to early October 2026: the US 30-year touched 5.67%, the UK 20-year 5.79% and the Japanese 30-year cleared auction at up to 4.12%. France's 10-year spread over Germany reached about 101 bp in September, a third above its one-year average. A disorderly sale that forces a central bank to buy, as the Bank of England did in 2022, would raise borrowing costs for every government, Canada's included.

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: G7 long yields at their July-October 2026 highs, OAT-Bund spread well above its one-year average, high Brent futures prices. Brakes: yields eased from early-October highs, JGB auctions well covered, central banks holding rates high (the Fed held its range on 28 Oct [17]), TPI conditions.

Why Impact 6 Key price: the long-dated yield of the market that breaks (UK 20-year as reference).

The other facts on file (3)
  • 30-year JGB auction of 6 Aug 2026: yield at the lowest accepted price 3.952% [6] (6 Aug 2026)
  • Bank of England temporary purchases of long-dated gilts, 28 Sep to 14 Oct 2022, to restore orderly market conditions [7] (28 Sep 2022)
  • Bank of England: the 30-year gilt yield rose 160 bp in just a few days in September 2022 [13] (5 Oct 2022)

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Grind higher, no break

Yields stay high and auctions clear; central banks do not step in.

  2. S2

    A gilt or OAT break

A UK fiscal event or a French government crisis pushes long yields up fast; the Bank of England or the ECB acts.

  3. S3

    Rally

Lower oil cuts inflation and yields fall.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1No hike at the 8-9 Dec FOMC and stable gilt auctions
S2UK 20-year above 6% on the Bank of England series
S3Brent below US$90 in the IEA's next report

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

Savers, pension funds and insurers earn more on new money at 5% or more [1][2]. A central bank backstop, if it comes, caps the damage, as in 2022 [7]. Canada's lower yields (3.78% against 4.96% in the US on 22 Oct) [9][1] keep its borrowing relatively cheap.
