Why it matters

On 20 Oct 2026 the UK sent RAF Typhoons to fly defensive counter-air missions over Saudi cities and infrastructure, its second step-up in a month, after Houthi attacks that the UN envoy calls a grave escalation. London says the jets will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis. The risk is that the UK fires into Yemen again, as it did with US forces in 2024 and 2025, or that a Houthi strike hits UK forces in the kingdom.

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: two UK step-ups in a month; deadly attacks on Saudi airports; UK tankers already refuel Saudi strikes in Yemen; the 2024-25 record. Brakes: the explicit no-strike line; no current US-led strike campaign reported; Saudi air defences carry the main load. An open contest. Likelihood scores the strike limb.

Why Impact 3 Threshold case one UK strike in Yemen or one hit on a UK site without mass casualties.

How it spreads

If

Between 26 Oct 2026 and 25 Oct 2027, UK forces strike targets in Yemen, or a Houthi missile or drone hits a UK aircraft or a site in Saudi Arabia where UK forces are deployed, as confirmed by the MoD or by two independent reports.

Channels 4 on the card

  1. CanadaNo Canadian deployment or loss sourced.
  2. UK defenceA strike in Yemen ends the defensive-only line and adds a combat task to a stretched force.
  3. Energy and shippingThe UK links its support to energy supplies; a wider war on Saudi infrastructure feeds the Red Sea and Gulf risks.
  4. UK securityA UK combat role would make the UK a named Houthi enemy again (Strature reading).

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Defence only

Typhoons intercept drones and missiles over Saudi Arabia and the line holds.

  2. S2

    Back over Yemen

A mass-casualty attack on a Saudi city, or a US-led strike package, draws the RAF into strikes, as in 2024-25.

  3. S3

    A hit on UK forces

A Houthi strike on King Fahd Air Base or another site with UK personnel.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1No MoD statement on a strike in Yemen
S2A UK statement on self-defence strikes or a US request
S3A Houthi statement naming British forces as targets

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

UK air defence protects Saudi oil and cities that matter for world energy prices, which London names as a UK interest. A Gulf partner seen as reliable may help UK defence and trade ties with Riyadh (Strature reading).
