Impact is the average of the four parts, rounded, plus one point when Canada is directly hit on two or more channels, up to 10.

Two separate scales from 1 to 10. Strature never multiplies or merges them.

What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. Bangkok has declined to reconvene the Joint Boundary Commission (as reported, low-confidence source) [6]
  2. Geneva exchange at UNHCR; Cambodia says 20,000 civilians remain displaced [7]
  3. 2025 fighting killed at least 150 and displaced about one million; bilateral trade fell 40% to US$1.3bn in H1 2026 [5]

Why it matters

Thailand and Cambodia fought twice in 2025, in July and in December; the clashes killed at least 150 people and displaced about a million. A ceasefire agreed on 27 Dec 2025 has held for ten months, with shots, a mortar round and mine blasts but no battle. The land border has been shut since June 2025 and boundary talks have not restarted.

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: no boundary talks, reinforced troops, mine incidents, hard words in Geneva. Brakes: ten months of truce, local commander contacts, ASEAN and US pressure and the trade deal.

Why Impact 4 Threshold case: two days of shelling in one week.

  • Thailand returned fire after three shots near a Thai base; 19 explosions logged on the border since April 2026 [3] (17 Jul 2026)
  • Whole land border closed since 23 Jun 2025; Anutin: not yet time to reopen; Cambodian reinforcement reported; Hun Manet asks for boundary commission [4] (18 Apr 2026)
  • July 2025 fighting killed at least 38 and displaced some 300,000 by 28 July (as reported, low-confidence source) [12] (28 Jul 2025)
  • Thailand said on 14 Nov 2025 that the US had suspended tariff talks over the dispute; talks resumed on 15 Nov after an Anutin-Trump call [8] (21 Nov 2025)

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Cold truce

The ceasefire holds, the border stays shut, small incidents continue.

  2. S2

    Thaw

A gradual reopening of checkpoints and a return to the boundary commission.

  3. S3

    Third round

A mine blast or a shooting with deaths leads to artillery duels within days, as in July and December 2025.

The signposts of each scenario

S1The border committee keeps meeting and logging incidents
S2A date for a boundary commission meeting
S3Either side suspends the 27 Dec 2025 joint statement

The other side

A real thaw would reopen land crossings and help bilateral trade, which fell 40% [5], bring back border jobs and remove a drag on Thailand's trade talks [8]. Joint demining under the truce [2] would make the border safer for farmers.
