Parliament brought down Ilie Bolojan's government on 5 May 2026, by 281 votes to 4. Three would-be prime ministers then failed before Luca Niculescu won investiture on 20 Oct 2026, by 280 votes to 58. His cabinet is mostly Social Democrat (PSD) and leans on the Liberals (PNL) and the Hungarian party (UDMR), whose support is conditional. Within a week, PSD and PNL were quarrelling in public over the state of the public finances.
