Why it matters
Iron ore was USD 90.40 a tonne on 23 Oct 2026, so a fall of about 11.5% would cross the line. On 15 Oct the Singapore November contract touched USD 89.85, its weakest since 24 Sep 2024. Australia's iron ore export prices are already about 14-15% lower than a year ago, China's crude steel output fell 2.9% in January-September, and Guinea's Simandou mine is ramping up. A month below USD 80 would cut Australia's largest export and the income of other exporters, Canada's among them.
Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: Simandou ramping, a two-year low on 15 Oct, lowest named 2026 forecast USD 85/t. Brakes: 2026 consensus USD 94/t, September steel output steady, Simandou's 60 Mt rate not due until 2028.
Why Impact 5 Key price iron ore USD/t. Threshold case: one monthly average just under USD 80, about 11.5% below 23 Oct. Canada one channel only.
Where it sits
How it spreads
Between 26 Oct 2026 and 31 Oct 2027, the benchmark iron ore price (62% Fe fines, front-month Singapore Exchange contract, as reported by a named market source) averages below US$80 a tonne over one full calendar month.
Not under wayChannels 4 on the card
- CanadaCanada exports iron ore (Rio Tinto guides 15-18 Mt of 2026 sales from its Canadian operations [5]); a lower price cuts the value of Canadian iron ore exports; no Canadian dollar figure found.
- Australia's export incomeA lower price cuts company revenue and royalty and tax receipts (Strature's view).
- Interest ratesLower export income would weigh on national income while the RBA fights inflation (Strature's view).
- ChinaA slump signals weaker steel demand; cheaper ore lowers mill costs (Strature's view).
Three scenarios and their signposts
- S1
Grinding lower
Simandou ramps on schedule and Chinese output keeps sliding, and the price moves towards the line (a scenario, not a forecast).
- S2
The line is crossed
Weak steel demand in China and rising supply push a monthly average below USD 80.
- S3
Holding up
Chinese output steadies and Simandou slips; the price stays near USD 90.
| Path | Signpost |
|---|---|
| S1 | First ore through the SimFer port in Q4 2026 |
| S2 | NBS crude steel output falls year on year for two months running |
| S3 | A published delay to Simandou's first-ore timetable |
No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side
Cheaper ore lowers costs for steelmakers in China, Japan and South Korea (Strature's view). Higher Australian export volumes partly offset the lower price.
