China's September surplus puts the 2025 record within reach

What happened

China's exports rose 36.3% in September 2026 from a year earlier, the fastest pace since February, customs data released on 14 Oct 2026 show1. Imports rose 31%1. The month's goods surplus was US$133.53bn1. The surplus for January to September 2026 reached US$938.11bn1. The full-year record, set in 2025, is US$1.189trn1. China's surplus with the United States was US$34.01bn in September, a 20-month high, and with the European Union US$34.8bn1. Global demand for chips and green-technology goods helped, the same report says1.

Why it matters

The surplus is the measure that China's trading partners respond to. A bigger surplus gives the EU and the US more reason to act on Chinese goods. For exporters that compete with Chinese goods in third markets, more volume means more price pressure. For buyers of Chinese parts, the same figures show that supply kept flowing in September.

Background

China's 2025 goods surplus was a record1. The US-China truce agreed in 2025 was extended on 28 Sep 2026 to 10 Jan 2027, China's Ministry of Commerce said2. China's National Bureau of Statistics publishes third-quarter growth on 19 Oct 20263.

What it means for our forecasts

Brief C-005 asks whether China's 2026 surplus passes the 2025 record. We put "past the record, without a new US or EU measure" at 80% (F-0195), our estimate, scored when it resolves on 31 Dec 2026. Others: 9% (F-0196), 9% (F-0197), 2% (F-0198). October to December must add about US$251bn, or US$84bn a month (Strature calculation: US$1,189bn less US$938.11bn). The brief tests September and October against US$176.7bn for the same months of 2025: September alone is US$133.53bn. Its home-demand test, September exports up 20% or more, was met at 36.3%; the 19 Oct growth release is the other half.

No estimate changes with this note. Estimates are our own, sealed when issued, and scored when they resolve.
